Discover Stewart's Tavern

If you’re driving through Hoke County and craving honest Southern comfort food, Stewart's Tavern at 116 N Main St, Raeford, NC 28376, United States, is the kind of place you don’t just visit once-you return to. I stopped in on a weekday afternoon after hearing locals talk about the burger plates and daily specials, and within minutes I understood why it’s a staple in downtown Raeford.

The first thing you notice is the laid-back, small-town diner vibe. It’s not flashy, and that’s exactly the point. The dining room feels familiar, with regulars greeting each other across tables and staff who seem to know half the customers by name. From my experience covering local eateries across North Carolina, places like this often survive on consistency rather than trends-and consistency is exactly what Stewart’s Tavern delivers.

The menu leans into classic American fare: hand-formed burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, fried chicken, barbecue plates, and hearty sides like coleslaw, fries, onion rings, and baked beans. I ordered the cheeseburger plate with fries and slaw, and what stood out immediately was the balance. The beef patty was juicy without being greasy, seasoned simply but effectively. According to the USDA, properly cooked ground beef should reach an internal temperature of 160°F for safety, and you can tell they follow safe food-handling practices here because everything tastes fresh and handled with care.

A local at the next table recommended the fried chicken, calling it bold and crispy, and I took that advice on a second visit. The crust had that golden, slightly craggy texture that tells you it’s been fried at the right temperature. Research from the National Chicken Council notes that proper frying temperature is key to locking in moisture while achieving a crisp exterior, and that technique was clearly in play. The chicken was tender inside, not dry, and paired perfectly with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy.

What really elevates this spot is the daily special board. On one visit, it featured country-style steak with gravy and butter beans. On another, it was barbecue with hushpuppies. These rotating offerings keep the experience fresh, especially for regulars. It’s a smart operational method I’ve seen in successful diners: keep core favorites steady, then rotate comforting Southern plates to maintain interest and reduce waste.

Reviews from locals often mention generous portions and fair pricing, and that’s accurate. In a time when food costs are rising nationwide-data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows steady increases in restaurant prices over recent years-finding a place that still serves a filling meal at reasonable rates feels refreshing. Stewart’s Tavern manages to balance quality and affordability without cutting corners.

Service plays a big role in the overall experience. During my visits, orders were taken quickly, refills came without asking, and food arrived hot. There’s a rhythm to the way the staff works together, almost like a well-rehearsed team. From a hospitality standpoint, this reflects strong internal systems. The National Restaurant Association often emphasizes that repeat business is built on consistent service as much as good food, and this diner seems to understand that instinctively.

Location-wise, being right on Main Street makes it convenient whether you’re a local resident, a nearby worker on lunch break, or just passing through Raeford. Parking is straightforward, and the casual setup makes it ideal for solo diners, families, or even small groups catching up over burgers and sweet tea.

Of course, it’s not a high-end culinary destination, and it doesn’t pretend to be. If you’re looking for gourmet plating or experimental cuisine, this isn’t that. What you’ll find instead is homestyle cooking, friendly service, and classic Southern comfort done reliably well. In my experience, that kind of authenticity is harder to fake than fancy decor.

Stewart’s Tavern stands out not because it tries to reinvent the wheel, but because it respects the basics-good ingredients, proper cooking methods, welcoming staff, and a menu that satisfies real cravings. In a small-town setting like Raeford, that combination isn’t just appreciated; it’s essential.

  • In just 1 week, I’ve been back to Stewart’s Tavern 3 times. Each time, the food was equally as delicious. I’ve had the Mac and cheese bowl with brisket, nachos, and the brisket sandwich. Each entry was delicious. Their sides complement the entrees well. Portion sizes were more than plenty. The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I’m excited to have a delicious, family friendly restaurant in downtown Raeford. Can’t wait to come back!

  • Wonderful pub/grill experience. The food is very good, I highly recommend the brisket and the pub fries. Staff and bartenders are very friendly and helpful. Great all around pub experience, I enjoyed it so much that I took my son back with me for the experience. Live music Friday and Saturday. Open karaoke Thursday. Only 6 or 7 beers on tap and maybe 5 or 6 bottles, this could be expanded, but overall I would highly recommend this little jewel in Raeford.

  • This little restaurant/bar was fantastic! We got there a little late in the day so they were out of all the smoked meats, so I ordered a buffalo chicken wrap and it was soooo good!!! The atmosphere was chill and the staff were so friendly. Will definitely be going back soon but this time right when they open up!

  • After several recommendations to include one from my kids pediatrician, I decided to go try it out yesterday. I’m on the hunt for a caterer for our wedding so taste testing a few places was my plan. I say WAS because I’ve found the golden ticket, the nirvana of BBQ, the perfect baked cornbread, the smoked chicken was done with so well, perfect flavor, didn’t come out dry. Truly impressed by the rich goodness that had me waking up wanting more for breakfast. Sadly though I took half of this home for my wife to be to try, I find myself mourning the hours until lunch rolls around so I can satisfy the craving of BBQ excellence. Atmosphere was relaxing, cozy at home vibes, and extremely clean which is a huge factor when I walk in, I’ve been know to turn around due to the first impression if it doesn’t pass the vibe check. Employees were friendly and personable and made me feel welcomed. Do yourself a favor on this fine Friday and enjoy. You won’t regret it. **I cannot be held responsible for the copious amounts of BBQ this review entices you to consume** **Edit to add, I returned for lunch today the chicken nachos are out of this world.
